This program is solely owned by the author, David Lee
Peterson, and all rights pursuant to ownership are
protected under international copyright law.
This copyrighted program, SCUD ATAK 2, is SHAREWARE.
It is not free. The author grants:
a) individual users a temporary no charge license to
examine the program for a reasonable evaluation
period.
b) individual users license to share the SHAREWARE
version of this program with others as long as there
is no charge. SHAREWARE vendors and distributors
should see SCUDA2.VEN for exceptions to these terms.
c) Bulletin Board systems may provide this program to
users as long as there is no specific charge beyond
usage time to download this program.
Thank you for complying with these requests.
Disclaimer of Author's Liabilities:
This program, SCUD ATAK 2, is provided by the author to users on
an as-is basis with no warranty whatsoever regarding suitability
for use on the user's system or fitness to any task. The user of
this software assumes any and all liability for any consequences
which may directly or indirectly result from use of this software.
The liability borne solely by the user includes, but is not
limited to, any damage to data or hardware on the user's system
and/or any system connected to the user's system by any means
whatsoever. The author can only certify that, to the best of his
knowledge, there is no intentionally placed code contained in this
program that would result in disruption, damage, or data loss to
any user's system and that the program works fine for the author.
Scud Atak 2 Hardware Requirements:
AT class machine or better. Fast 386\486 recommended.
True IBM-compatible VGA card w/ 256k or more memory.
This program uses direct VGA register and memory access. It
works for me on VGA monitors and multiple sync monitors.
If colors scramble please try /BIOSPAL command line switch.
True Microsoft-compatible mouse (w/ compatible driver!)
(some drivers incorrectly return actual screen coordinates
instead of the Microsoft mandated virtual coords causing cursor
on left half of screen only. Please replace driver!
Try /AM switch on the command line for temporary solution.)
Scud Atak 2 optionally supports:
Ad-Lib compatible FM music card for background music.
Soundblaster compatible DSP board for DMA digitized speech.
Disney Sound Source on LPT1 for digitized speech.
Joystick (if you don't really want to play for high score!)
If you have trouble running the program it may be that your
equipment does not conform to specs for true compatibility. I have
tested on IBM, ATI, OAK, and TRIDENT with Microsoft mouse driver and
have had no problems. Will consider fixes for incompatible hardware
if numbers warrant so if you have problems please drop me a line and
let me know what kind of problem you have and your complete
equipment list including BRAND NAMES and VERSIONS. Thanks!
Unfortunately, I can not promise to get back to you about
revisions/fixes. BUT... I can't fix what isn't broke!
Installation:
For best results unzip the program and support files into a
subdirectory on your hard disk. The name of the directory is
unimportant. The following files must be available in the
current directory when you execute the main program:
SCUDA2 .EXE Main executable
SCUDA201.CWG Video resource 1
SCUDA202.CWG Video resource 2
SCUDA203.CWG Video resource 3
SCUDA204.CWG Video resource 4
SCUDA2 .SND PC speaker resource
SCUDA2 .MUS Music resource
SCUDA2 .DIG Voice resource
SCUDA2 .DOC This documentation file
SCUDA2 .VEN Information for disk VENdors.
SCUDA2 .ORD Order form for SCUD ATAK 2
SCUDA2 .HIS High score table
Type:
scuda2 /help
for a complete list of command line switches.
SoundBlaster owners:
Simple:
SCUDA2 will examine the environment for the BLASTER environment
variable in order to automatically enable music and speech using
the proper port address and interrupt. This variable is added to
your AUTOEXEC.BAT by the program SET-ENV.EXE provided with your
SoundBlaster card. Type 'SET' at the DOS prompt to see if you
have a BLASTER variable defined. If you do not see a line that
contains 'BLASTER = ' then refer to your SB docs to find out how
to run 'SET-ENV'.
Advanced:
The format for the BLASTER variable is:
SET BLASTER = Axxx Ix Dx Tx (In AUTOEXEC.BAT)
Where
Axxx is port Address (ie. A220)
Ix is Irq num for DMA (ie. I7)
Dx is Dma channel (ie. D1)
(Note: this version works ONLY with D1!)
Tx is card Type (ie. T4)
1 = SB 1.0/1.5 (OPL2 mono 11 voice)
2 = SB pro (OPL2 stereo 22 voice)
3 = SB 2.0 (OPL2 mono 11 voice)
4 = SB pro 2 (OPL3 stereo 20 voice)
example:
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T1
for original SB at default port and irq.
If this variable is not set you will have to use command
line switches (ie. /sbp240 /sbi10) to inform the program
of the SB hardware info. If your SB is set to PORT 220 and
uses IRQ 7 you can use the default switch /sb. It would
probably be better to just add a BLASTER line to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you have not yet done so...
Sound Source owners:
If you wish to use a Disney Sound Source to provide digitized
sound you will have to inform SCUDA2 of this by adding a command
line switch when invoking the program. Ex.=-> scuda2 /ss
At this time the Sound Source is supported only on LPT1. The
Tandy variant is not supported. If the sound warbles experiment
with the /ssdx switch to change the delay. Use values 1-9 in
place of the x. A 486dx2 66 might need /ssd9.
If a SoundBlaster has been detected and reported and the /SS
switch is found, vocs will go through the SndSrc. If it is not
connected, you will not be able to switch to SoundBlaster while
the program is running.
Game overview:
You command missile defense posts protecting your city buildings
against incoming SCUD missiles which attack each hour. Your
defenses include 3 missile bases. Each base is initially stocked
with 10 missiles. Every three hours a truck will appear to
resupply your armaments. This means that you must ration your
missiles to maintain an adequate supply to destroy all three rounds
of enemy attacks between each resupply stage. Each enemy attack
round includes numerous SCUDs, enemy bomber(s), and possibly
satellite bombers. Some of the SCUDs are actually clusters of
missiles that will split into several individual missiles. If any
missile impacts a city building it will be destroyed. If a missile
impacts a missile base you will lose all missiles remaining at that
base until the base is resupplied. If all cities are destroyed
you are relieved of command and your tour is over.
Your mouse pointer will act as your missile guidance system. Select
which base to fire a missile from by using the appropriate button.
Bases are selected as follows:
Left Base Left mouse button Right ALT key
Middle Base Both mouse buttons Right SHIFT key
Right Base Right mouse button Right CTL key
NOTE: Use keyboard controls with trackball for a nostalgic thrill!!
When you fire a missile from one of your 3 bases to the pointer a
small x mark will appear on the screen. If a missile is available
at the selected base it will fly towards that point. Once you
fire a missile you are free to move the pointer and fire another
one. Many missiles can be flying to their marks at once. When a
missile reaches it's mark it will automatically explode. Any SCUD
missiles in the explosive concussion zone will be destroyed. The
ensuing explosion may well destroy other SCUDs entering the area.
Unlike SCUD missiles, planes and satellites will not be destroyed
by just entering an explosion. They can only be destroyed by a
direct hit.
POINTS:
Missile 100
MIRV 400
Plane (loaded) 800
Plane (empty) 400
Satellite 400, 600, or 800
(Depending on remaining load)
You will receive a 25 point bonus for each anti-missile
missile left at the end of the stage.
At each multiple of 20000 points you will have one of your
cities rebuilt if it is burning. If all cities are intact
at this point you will lose your chance to rebuild with this
bonus.
When all of your cities are destroyed your game is over. If
your score rates high enough you can enter your name into
the high score table.
Control Panel
The bottom of the screen contains a control panel to
show current game stats. The top line indicates the
number of anti-missle missles available at each base.
The bottom line shows the current stage and round and
the score. The 'E' or 'H' indicates how effective the
scuds are in destroying your buildings. If the game
is set to 'E'asy then scuds must hit the building in
the center. If the game is set to 'H'ard then a
building is destroyed if a scud hits any part of it.
On the left of the middle line is the speed control.
The white bar indicates optimum rate. The red bar
indicates the user selected rate, which defaults to
the optimum rate. The green bar shows the rate
required by your system and varies with computer and
VGA speed. If your machine is slow, the green bar
will be to the right of the red bar and the game speed
will be controlled by the limits of your system. If
you wish to speed up the game you will have to use the
'D'etail toggle to play against a no-detail black
background and/or the 'F4' trails-no-trails option.
On a fast machine, however, the green bar will be to
the left of the red bar and you will be able to modify
the game rate by using the '+' and '-' keys to speed
up or slow down the action, moving the red bar to the
left or right. As long as the red bar is to the right
of the green bar, the red bar will control the rate of
the game action. In any case, experiment with the
'D'etail toggle, the 'F4' trails toggle, and the '+'
and '-' speed controls to set the game rate to be the
most enjoyable for you.

SHAREWARE Information:
This copyrighted program is marketed using the SHAREWARE approach.
This approach grants individual users a temporary no charge
product evaluation license to try out a SHAREWARE version of a
program on their personal machine so that they can make a well
informed hands on decision about the product. Without advertising
or packaging hype and at minimal or no expense a user can legally
find out exactly how well the program will work on their system.
This allows the user to get a good idea of how much value the
program presents to them before they make a decision about
purchasing a permanent personal usage license for a commercial
version of the program. In return for the grant of the evaluation
license, users who evaluate the program are encouraged to freely
share the SHAREWARE version (and only the SHAREWARE version!) of
the program with others so that those others may also have the
opportunity to personally decide if the program presents value
that they may deem worthy of purchasing. This method eliminates
advertising, packaging, and multi-tier distribution expenses and
allows for a reasonable product cost to the user with the
additional benefit of allowing users to be able to know full well
how the program will work for them.
Please review the concept in your mind, as it seems to have been
twisted in reality. Many users tend to feel that the SHAREWARE
program author is independently wealthy enough to be free to spend
large amounts of time and money to prepare gifts for them to
enjoy. This is usually not the case. The intent of the author is
simple: to sell a desirable product directly to a motivated
purchaser for a reasonable yet profitable fee using a marketing
scheme that is extremely beneficial to the prospective purchaser.
I do not have the unlimited resources to develop programs simply
as a favor to players and it is not my intent to share the fruits of
my effort and labor with the world at large gratis. I am trying to
create a business that can provide enjoyable SHAREWARE programs that
you will be pleased to share with others and be even happier to
purchase.
NOTE:
SCUDATAK generated less than 50 registrations worldwide but I
received many more requests to allow vendors to 'sell' my
product. I spent far more than $250 answering (e)mail that
related to bugs in third-party mouse drivers. Do I know how
well the SHAREWARE idea works? Have I been encouraged? Has it
really been two and a half years? How long have I simply
delayed the release of this program? How many more programs
have I written that have not been released? If a person is
interested in SHAREWARE programs, what could that person do to
encourage an author to release more programs?
HINT:
My brother and I are having a great time playing some neat
VGA platform games, side scrollers, top scrollers, and other
fun stuff. I get to play because I bust my brain coding.
He gets to play because he popped for a 386dx33. Why don't
you get to play?
Benefits of Registration:
SCUD ATAK 2 is copyrighted and owned by David Lee Peterson. Users
are granted licenses to use this software which has been created
through the effort and at the expense of the author, David Lee
Peterson. Without payment, your usage license expires when you
decide that you really like the game and you start it up on your
computer with the ernest intent of actually playing it instead of
just seeing what it is like. This is the way that definition will
be given to the nebulous term 'evaluation period'. Of course, the
software police will not be lurking in your mind trying to figure
out your intent each time that you start up the program. Instead,
the author leaves it to your conscience and your honor to be
responsible enough to determine if you are evaluating the effort
or, to put it bluntly yet succinctly, robbing the author. Thus,
the first benefit of any level of registration is to allow you to
feel good about yourself with regard to the way you treated the
creator of an entertaining program.
There are two levels of registration for SCUD ATAK 2.
The first level is $5.00 US. At this level of registration you
will receive a postcard indicating receipt of your registration
fee, granting you a permanent usage license for the SHAREWARE
version of SCUD ATAK 2, and thanking you for your support. This
level will let you show support for my effort and encourage me
to continue creating PC SHAREWARE for your use and evaluation even
if you do not wish to purchase the commercial version of the game.
The second level is $10.00 US. Users who register at this level
will receive the commercial version of SCUD ATAK 2 which will:
1) Contain 60 full stages of increasing difficulty.
2) Not contain REGISTER! notices (including pesky blimps!)
3) Have uniform short delay in the unused missile countdown.
4) Really encourage me to work harder to create the kind of games
that you indicate that you like to play.
At $10.00 a pop a high volume of sales is required to provide
an adequate profit after expenses. Only YOU can insure that
this occurs. Write your check to David Peterson for $10.00
right now, this very instant, put it in an envelope addressed to:
David Peterson
5909 48th Ave.
Riverdale, Md. 20737
and RUN down to the mailbox and send it off! Finished yet?
Alright!! I thank you, my wife thanks you, my daughter thanks
you, my son thanks you, and my brother thanks you...THANK YOU!
If funding permits it won't be long till we can get out some
really great stuff. I went from SCUD ATAK to SCUD ATAK2 on
a shoestring. What can I do with a real budget! Lets all
find out!
Please support my business if you find my programs enjoyable.
Only with your support will I have the funding to pour the
money into the animation, artwork, music, and sound effects that
this type of program deserves.
Thank you for taking the time to read through this section.
